The next afternoon found me at a shooting range wondering how someone could miss every damn shot they tried to hit.

There was no way she should be this bad. Did she need glasses?

“Why are you looking at me?” she demanded.

“I was just wondering if you need glasses. There is no way you can miss this many shots.”

“First, sir, I have never shot a gun before,” she told me with the gun pointing at my crotch. I pushed the gun further to the ground.

She smiled sheepishly, “Sorry.”

“Yara, it’s obvious you have never shot a gun before.”

“All of us can’t be damn killers,” she mumbled low as if I couldn’t hear her. I ignored her statement.

“You should still be able to hit something.”

“I’m trying. I don’t know what I keep doing wrong.”

“It could be how you’re holding the gun.”

“What’s wrong with how I’m holding the gun?” she quizzed with her hand on her hips, and the gun hanging limply in her hand.

I could only shake my head. We were taught how to handle guns when we were five years old. Any children we had whether it was a boy or a girl would be taught how to handle weapons. This was just damn pitiful.

“You’ve seen too many bad gangster movies. They have ruined you.”

“How?”

“You hold the gun sideways, Yara. That’s some movie shit.”

“Fine, teach me then Mr. Miyaki.”

“Who?”

“You’ve never seen Karate Kid?”

“No.”

She shook her head. “We’ll have to fix that. We’re going to have to get you together. I love movies.”

“Must be action movies. The way you keep disrespecting that gun.”

She frowned at me again. “Yes, I like action movies. You better be happy since you’ll be watching some starting tonight. We’ll be watching Karate Kid.”

“I don’t watch movies.” I wasn’t big on television at all. I had them around the house, but I didn’t really watch them. I was either working, exercising, or hanging with my family.

She waved my comment away. “Well, you decided you wanted a wife. Things are going to change.”

They were already changing. It was a good change. I was enjoying her presence in my life and in my bed.

“I watch movies, so my husband will occasionally watch them too.” She raised her eyebrows in question.

“Yes.”

“Good. Now, show me how to shoot this gun, so I don’t embarrass you. I can hear your shady ass cousins laughing behind me every time I shoot this stupid gun.”

I turned to look at Viktor, Maxim, Dimitri, and Michail all looking our way.

“Horrible,” Dimitri lipped.

I wanted to laugh. Yara was already making a difference with my family. We tended to take life seriously. She was changing all of us with the ATV riding, all you can eat seafood restaurants, and concerts. All these were things we never would have chosen to do on our own.

“Come on, lev. I can’t have them talking about my wife. Pick up your gun.”

She picked up the gun, and I stood directly behind her holding her hands up to place them in the correct position.

“Close one of your eyes and glance down at your target.
